Lisa Deveaux envisioned an organization that provides wellness services tailored to a diverse audience. However, current statistics reveal a concerning reality: only 14% of Americans engage in meditation, which is a widely acknowledged wellness practice. According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, 68% of people find conventional psychotherapy unaffordable due to its high costs and limited access. This makes mindfulness and physical modalities like Pilates and yoga more accessible to the general public. By providing services like these, Brown Skin Wellness is helping to fill a void in mental health care resources for people of color who may not be able to afford traditional therapies. Additionally, research suggests that mindfulness-based activities have been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as improve overall positive well-being. Yoga has many physical and mental health benefits including improved flexibility, posture, balance, strength, and concentration. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that strengthens muscles and increases range of motion. It is also believed to help cultivate mindfulness through its focus on deliberate movements. All three modalities can be used to reduce stress levels and increase one’s sense of self-awareness. By providing these services to their target market, Brown Skin Wellness is helping to bridge the gap between communities and overall health.

Furthermore, studies have shown that people of color are more likely than other cultures to seek treatment for mental illness, but are less likely to receive adequate care or access resources. In response, Brown Skin Wellness is dedicated to providing accessible services in a safe and inclusive space with culturally aware instructors. Through their educational events, workshops, and classes, they are helping to create an understanding of how the connection between body and mind can lead to improved health outcomes for people of color. By attending these events individuals can gain insight into how physical practices such as yoga and Pilates can be used in conjunction with meditation to reduce stress levels, increase self-awareness, and improve overall well-being. Brown Skin Wellness is helping to create a space in which people of color can get the treatment they need for mental health in a safe and welcoming environment.

Beyond healing for brown people is bringing health and wellness to corporate/organizational spaces. The statistics say that 81% of employees want to quit their job, 85% of workers are not fully engaged at work, and 69% of employees say they would be more committed if they felt appreciated.U.S. corporations spend $2.9 million a day replacing lost talent! Whereas those organizations that have a good corporate culture experience a 400% increase in revenue. Brown Skin Wellness can assist in providing creative, tailored wellness solutions to help employers create environments that employees are excited to be a part of.

A single request for a wellness program from a client accelerated the birth of Brown Skin Wellness. In January 2023, the company was established. Recognizing that wellness is more than Pilates, she engaged the support and knowledge of Tennille Raney to share her experience as a psychotherapist that uses meditation therapy for her clients. Lisa also connected with Elise Guadalupe’s personal experience and healing journey with yoga to collaborate in the development of wellness programs for prospective clients.

At Brown Skin Wellness, we support women, men, teenagers and children in learning to be intentional about self-nurturing. And we also work with women’s and men’s groups, youth centers, educational organizations, and corporate entities.

I’ve always wanted to try Pilates but I had a fear of not being able to fit in or complete the exercises like those around me. My introductory class with Lisa changed all of that for me. I came in with hip pain and limited mobility and during the class, she made sure to address all my concerns and assist me whenever I struggled. After the introductory class, I was sold! I immediately purchased class passes and booked all my classes in advance just to see her. Ask yourself… Can you think of a time when you’ve sat still for 10 minutes and thought about nothing? Most of us can’t..Well, this past weekend I had the pleasure of attending a meditation mashup hosted by one of the coolest people I know. the beautiful and super talented @themindfulscroll. This sister is a mom, a wife, model, therapist and a meditation coach.. This particular session was focused on Creatives and cleaning out all of the junk that gets in the way of us doing so.. At one point we were asked to write down our “junk” so that it could be burned as a symbol of us letting go. I can honestly say in the moment I felt very relaxed and free. SO going forward I’m gonna do my best to implement this into my daily routine. 10 minutes a day to clear my head. Sort out the junk, acknowledge, tidy up and move on thanks for bringing me along…it was needed. Thank you.
